3 Faulty Beliefs Maker Small Businesses Have About Newsletters

You've graduated from hobby to trying to build up your side hustle Making things, but dislike the idea of starting a newsletter.

Yesterday, we talked about some of the reasons you can grow your business bigger and faster with a newsletter. Now, I overall dislike most newsletters as well, but it's still an extremely powerful platform that can explode your business if done correctly.

To do that, we need to change how we think about it.

Faulty Belief 1: Email Is Dead

This has been the argument since the mid-2000's and isn't anymore true now than it was then.

How many people do you know who use email every single day? Pretty much everyone with a pulse over age 10. Plus, now we have 24/7 access on our phones for those quick minutes between other things or while binging Netflix.

Until information can be blasted directly into our brains, email is here to stay and everyone already uses it.

Faulty Belief 2: All Newsletters Are Spam

We all hate spam, so you don't want to add to the problem.

Just to state the obvious, spam is unwanted email. If you make your email valuable enough, it's by definition not spam. The key here is to focus on providing free value to your audience, not pitching them.

If something is valuable, it's wanted and wanted emails are not spam, so make your emails valuable.

Faulty Belief 3: There Is No Way To Make Money With Newsletters

Right out the gate, if this were true, no one would send them. Period.

Newsletters make money, which is why almost every successful business uses them. But with our newsletters that focus on value, not pitching, there isn't a direct link between revenue and emails opened. What we're really doing is building trust with your target audience by consistently showing up and giving them free value.

Building trust is the number one way to convert attention into purchases.

But David, Isn't This What Social Media Stories Are All About?

That's what social media companies would like you to believe, but they forget to mention the big bad algorithm. With email, there's no algorithm and you can get your message directly into the inbox of your opted-in audience.

It's a funnel so simple that no one does it, which is where you can win by jumping in early.

Take social media attention, capture emails to add to your list, nurture that list by providing consistent free value, build trust with your audience, and watch as people ask to buy your products.
