5 Reasons Why I'm Thankful To Be A Maker

Like everyone else, earlier today, I was caught in a round-table where everyone said what they were thankful for.

Now, not to sound like a cynic, but I've never been a fan of that particular Thanksgiving tradition. Don't get me wrong, I firmly believe that we have so much that we should be thankful for and we should be thankful. I mean the generic answers most people give like family, friends, and spending time together.

But it did get through my cynical side and it made me think about why I'm thankful to be a Maker.

Reason 1: I Refuse To Settle For "Fine"

As Black Friday sales start tomorrow (well...those that haven't started yet), I find that I'm far more picky than I used to be.

Yes, prices have been going up for everything, but even beyond price, I cannot stand paying money for something that doesn't work exactly how I want it to. This mainly comes from knowing that, with enough time, I can create something that does do exactly what I want. So why settle?

Reason 2: I'm Constantly Asking What Can Be Improved

Even once I finish a project, I find myself trying to figure out what I could have done better.

It's a duel-edged sword for Makers because we want and need to finish projects, but we're also always looking to improve and have new ideas. The balance for me has been to stop integrating new ideas about half way through a project, but note down the ideas for the next one.

Reason 3: I'm More Confident In My Abilities

I've said it before, but Making things is a super power.

A few years ago, I would have stopped and looked to YouTube for any little thing trying to find the "best" way of doing it. Once you've made things for a few years, you'll find yourself just jumping in immediately because you either know you can do it or are comfortable that you can figure it out as you go.

Reason 4: I'm More Frequently Tapping Into My Creative Side

For decades of my life, I didn't think I was creative.

However, Making things has helped me realize that I'm not purely logical and can create cool things as well. In fact, I've started to be logically creative by trying to figure out how to make different things go together in a way that makes sense and doesn't break a theme (speaking of which...).

Reason 5: I Have A Greater Appreciation For Themed Places

It's no secret that I love Galaxy's Edge.

Seeing how much time and effort master Makers put into both the biggest features and most minor details inspires me to try to create similar things scaled to my own home. I would love nothing more than to have our home be a completely immersive experience, jumping from Star Wars to Small World to Hercules (the Disney version).

Whatever you are thankful for, Happy Thanksgiving!
