My Workshop Is Constantly Changing (And Why That’s A Good Thing)

Most people have some idea of what a completed workspace looks like to them, but active workspaces should never be complete.

I get it, our brains want to close loops and projects need to be completed. This is completely fine for projects you build in you workspace since they need to go somewhere else. But your workshop should never be complete.

But why never?

Finished Workspace = Finished Growth

If your workspace doesn't need to change anymore, you're done growing as a Maker.

If you were trying to create a big manufacturing empire, yes you would want to create refined systems and structures to maximize efficiency. But we're just trying to create cool things in our garages for ourselves, friends, or maybe to sell on Etsy. If you're learning new techniques, you'll pick up new and upgraded tools, and your workshop will have to grow along with you.

The best part of being a Maker is discovering the new level unlocks, but your shop must grow with you.

Your Maker Philosophy Should Continue To Evolve

I am not the same Maker today that I was 2 years ago, and my workshop is not the same as it was 2 years ago.

When I first started out, I didn't care about tool storage, but wanted to have a workbench to build projects on. A couple of years ago, I wanted all the storage and work surfaces to look clean and pristine. Now, I want everything to feel like it belongs in the Star Wars universe.

How we think about our projects is reflected in our workspace.

If you want your projects to more creative, be more creative with your workspace to put you in a creative environment.
