The 1 Reason Writing Is Now Essential For Business Owners

AI

Most business owners and contributors discount the importance of writing.

When I first entered the corporate business world in 2012, I also didn't think writing was important. However, most people write a significant amount every day. We send emails, Slack and Teams messages, file reports, add code comments, and look for the right gif online.

But now, there is 1 reason why writing is an essential skill for all business owners and those who want to succeed.

The 1 Reason: AI

All the popular AI models we have at our disposal require prompts.

Most people still use AI as intelligent Google searches to find what they are looking for. A sentence or two might be sufficient for basic things, but AI's current capabilities are unlocked once the prompts get longer and more intentional. A quick search for amazing prompts will show that longer prompts are much better.

The better the written prompt, the better the results back will be.

Writing Clarifies Your Thinking

Before we can generate some solid prompts, we need to fully understand what we're thinking about doing.

Writing is one of the best ways to clarify your thinking. Whether it's in a paper journal, Notion, or any of the hundreds of other methods, seeing your thoughts on a page makes them real and gets them out of your head clearing important space. That space is essential for building on ideas and understanding exactly what you're trying to accomplish.

The best advice from 2025 I took was to create a daily writing habit, whether in public like these articles, or my own notes for later.

Clear Thoughts Lead To Better Prompts

Now that your head is clear, we can focus on exactly what we want to work with AI to accomplish.

The best thing about AI is it (usually) does exactly what you tell it to do, but the worst part is it does exactly what you tell it to do. Where most people get frustrated is they wrote one thing, but meant another or left something that should have been specific as ambiguous. AI will try to fill in the gaps, so the clearer your thinking is about what you're working on, the better the prompt writing is.

If you're still not clear, leverage AI to have a conversation ahead so that it can help you get clear and get to the amazing prompts.

Everyone who wants to succeed in business must embrace AI, so must also learn to write well.
