Why You Should Base Content Decisions On Data, Not Emotion

Many creators start out posting their Maker content and wonder why it goes nowhere.

When content goes nowhere, it's frustrating and a majority choose to quit. What can be more frustrating though is when someone has some early success that seems to disappear. Consistency plays a major factor in success, but if consistency isn't the issue, its the type of content, topics, or hooks in the content that need fixing.

Most success, or lack there of, comes down to how content decisions are made and there are only 2 ways we make them.

What Happens With Emotional Decision Making

Most people have heard the advice, "go with your gut."

While it may make sense occasionally, it is overall terrible advice. What happens is people can start to believe that they have some kind of sixth sense for what will or won't work. Then, when it doesn't work, we blame the dreaded algorithm, the audience not understanding our genius, or anything other than that "gut feeling."

Once someone has enough successes under their belt, they can make gut decisions, but only because that is based on their experience from years of success.

What Happens With Data Decision Making

Fortunately, we live in the digital age where data is king.

With data-based decisions, we don't have to wonder what is or isn't working, we can know. The key is to look at variance in percentage form, not just the numbers themselves. If someone's normal content gets 200 comments and a new piece gets 300, it would be stupid not to double down on the new topic because it had 100 more comments.

But the same is true for normal content getting 2 comments versus 3 if we look at the 150% increase between the two.

Data tells us what topics or themes are resonating that we should double down on and which ones fall flat to either ditch or try to reframe.

Everyone, no matter whether you have 100 followers or 100 million, has content that outperforms their norm and content that falls flat. The biggest difference between success and failure is who uses data to drive future decisions and who ignores it to go with their gut.
